Album Review - Transporter - Now Magazine, Toronto. Rating: NNN

Victoria power trio Immaculate Machine play straight-up melodic pop with a flair for the theatrical. The tunes on Transporter are hooky and hummable, with Kathryn Calder's pretty keyboard bits layered over top of unpretentious crunchy college rock guitar riffs. Because the three members – Calder, Brooke Gallupe and Luke Kozlowski – trade off on vocals, IM have a call-and-response girl-boy thing going on that makes it feel like there's a subtle narrative thread running throughout the album. It may be unintentional, but Transporter comes off a bit like an alt-rock operetta about rock musicians loving and living and fucking The Man and getting high and kicking the habit on the West Coast. Which is probably not so far from the truth.

Immaculate Machine rock Rancho Relaxo Friday (September 24).
