DES a Pregnancy Drug Raising Daughter's Cancer Odds
DES is a drug that millions of pregnant women took decades ago to prevent complications and miscarriage. The usage of this drug has put those mother's daughters at higher risk for health problems and breast cancer. The results are showing up now founded by the new studies in the U.S.
The majority of these daughters have crossed the 40's and they even do not know anything about the risk, which their mothers have given to them by using a synthetic estrogen drug. The research also shows that the rate of infertility is twice as common in these daughters whereas, the risk of breast cancer is doubled in them.
Not only the daughters, but the sons of DES users are also facing health risks. They are facing testicular cysts and problems. The study also shows that daughters of the DES users also have problems of irregular periods, signs of infertility issues and starting late menstruating. The research also shows the facts that only in the United States more than two million men and two million women have been exposed to DES when they were in the womb. This does not mean that everyone rush out with the thinking of getting a breast or cervical cancer. It is suggested that they should speak to their physician about it.
The study further shows that normally in women 1 in 50 has chances of developing the breast cancer but in the case of the daughters of the DES users the ratio has reduced to 1 in 25.
DES has been used widely in the United States and Canada during 1940 to 1960. It was used to prevent bleeding, premature birth, miscarriage and some other problems. This medicine was also sold by many companies in the form of creams and pills. Later, studies showed that the DES did not work therefore the U.S. doctors were told to stop prescribing it, in 1971. The study on DES user's daughters started in 1992. 4600 DES daughters were involved in the study with a comparison of 1900 daughters of women, who did not use DES.
